It's something of a long-shot, and even though the Academy is only slightly more "with it" than other voting bodies, it seems that a movie like Uncut Gems and Sandler himself might have a better comeback story narrative at the Oscars.(Image credit: A24) Why Adam Sandler Especially Should Have Been Nominated For Best Actor The Academy Award nominations are due out on January 13 and I'm holding out hope for Sandler to appear there. Still, I'm holding out for the Sandlerissance.
He's doing this in the wake of a pretty successful Netflix stand-up special, too. Though he's often shy of the press and critics, Sandler has been putting himself out there, taking part in panels, doing interviews with major outlets, and making the rounds in hopes of getting a nomination he deserves. It's a shame he couldn't be recognized when he finally deserved it, especially considering Sandler actually played the game this time. There is historical president for the HFPA being Sandler-friendly. Yet, he was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2003 for Punch-Drunk Love. In his career, Sandler has been nominated for very few real awards outside of Golden Raspberries, Kids Choice Awards, and MTV VMAs.
Sandler getting a nod for this role in an indie film makes too much sense. Increasing the number of nominees can, at times, lead to smaller indie films getting nods they wouldn't from more prestigious award shows. That means more categories, more nominees, and the HFPA going out of its way to nominate Knives Out just for more Daniel Craig. The Golden Globes are specifically designed to get as much star power in one room as possible. But that hasn't stopped the Golden Globes before, where Get Out, The Martian, and Inherent Vice were all comedies.įor an award show that often is such pure nonsense, Sandler would have been the perfect nominee or winner. It's possible that the HFPA didn't know what to do with this oddball indie movie. It's a Sandler film with plenty of funny moments, but it's not at all a comedy and it sure as hell isn't a musical. That Sandler didn't appear in either the comedy or drama categories may be because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had trouble deciding what Uncut Gems was. (For the record the only person I'm rooting for here is Eddie Murphy.) At least Sandler would have made for an interesting narrative, for a movie that was fresh and exciting. Both of these categories are so dull, with the same actors who are always nominated for the same types of movies that always dominate at award shows. And though I don't like the idea of advocating for another old, straight, white man to join the ranks of an already very old, straight, and white category, Sandler deserves it more than at least Daniel Craig and his Knives Out Colonel Sanders voice.
